Commercial AV installation in a Texas office

Written by Diego Hernandez · AMX Designer | Savant Programmer | Harman Pro Certified

When a restaurant, office, or retail space needs background music that actually sounds good, the Sonos Amp commercial audio route is often the fastest way to get there. It is not a commercial-grade 70-volt system, and it should not be sold as one. But for single-zone spaces and smaller multi-zone layouts across Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, a properly designed deployment delivers reliable streaming music, per-zone control, and an install cost that makes sense. We have built these systems for Texas businesses for years, and this guide covers when the Sonos Amp fits, when it does not, and how to spec it correctly.

Why Businesses Choose the Sonos Amp

The Sonos Amp is a 125-watt-per-channel streaming amplifier that powers a pair of passive speakers and pulls music from the streaming services your staff already know how to use. No complicated server, no training for the manager, no IT ticket to change the playlist. The appeal for a Houston restaurant owner or a Dallas retail manager is simple: the same app they use at home controls the music at work.

Three things make this approach fit so well in small business settings:

  • Streaming-native control. Playlists, schedules, and volume live in the Sonos app. Staff changes do not break the system because there is no local computer involved.
  • Clean, predictable install. One amp, one speaker pair per zone, standard low-impedance speaker wire. Our technicians can typically complete a single-zone install in one visit.
  • Scalable in steps. Start with one zone for the dining room, add a second Sonos Amp for the patio later, and group them in the app when you want the same music everywhere.

When a Sonos Amp Commercial Audio System Is the Right Call

Not every business is a Sonos Amp candidate. The rule of thumb we use when scoping commercial audio in Houston and across Texas: if the space needs one to four independently controlled zones of background music, and the wiring is low-impedance, the Sonos Amp is a strong option. That covers a large share of the projects we see, including:

  • Restaurants and cafes that want separate music on the patio versus the dining room.
  • Offices and medical clinics that want quiet background audio in lobbies and break rooms.
  • Retail showrooms and salons that want brand-appropriate playlists per department.
  • Gyms and studios that need reliable music during class hours without a staff member babysitting a phone.

For larger venues, distributed 70-volt paging, or zoned announcements tied to a fire alarm system, we specify a different platform. The Sonos Amp does not do paging well, and it is not rated for high-volume public address work. That distinction matters, and a good integrator will tell you the same thing before they sell you anything.

Multi-Zone Layouts: One Amp per Zone, Grouped in the App

The cleanest multi-zone pattern is one amp per zone, each driving its own pair of in-ceiling or surface-mount speakers. A two-zone restaurant might look like this:

  1. Dining room: one Sonos Amp driving two in-ceiling speakers, positioned for even coverage over the tables.
  2. Patio: a second Sonos Amp driving two weather-rated outdoor speakers, grouped separately so patio volume stays lower in the evening.

Each zone keeps its own volume and source, and one tap in the app plays the same playlist in both. This is the same architecture we use for the multi-room Sonos setups we document in our Sonos installation guide, applied to a commercial floor plan.

For the speakers themselves, we commonly pair the Sonos Amp with Niles Audio in-ceiling models for even coverage, and Russound surface-mount speakers for rooms where a ceiling mount is not practical.

What the Installer Handles That the Box Does Not

The Sonos Amp is a component, not a system. A professional install is what turns it into reliable commercial audio. The work items that matter in every deployment we do in Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio:

  • Speaker selection and placement. Coverage, not volume, is the goal. We calculate spacing for even music across the room, then pick speakers rated for the ceiling type and humidity.
  • Network readiness. Sonos Amps need a stable network. We verify the access point coverage and switch capacity before the amps go in, and we will often tie this into the structured cabling work a building already needs.
  • Equipment rack and power. Amps live in a locked, ventilated rack with clean cable management, surge protection, and a labeled breaker. A neat rack is a serviceable rack.
  • Schedules and zones. We configure opening and closing times, volume limits per zone, and staff training so the system runs itself.

If the building also needs the network backbone for these zones, our commercial network installation service covers the access points, switches, and cabling in the same project, which keeps one team accountable for the whole result.

Budgeting a Commercial Audio Project

For a typical single-zone install, the line items are the amp, two speakers, cabling and terminations, network preparation, and labor. A two-zone project roughly doubles the audio components but shares the network and programming work, which is why multi-zone deployments usually come in at a better cost per zone. We quote per space after a site walk-through, because ceiling type, wall construction, and existing network quality change the labor picture more than the component list does.

Most Texas business owners are surprised by how little space the equipment takes. Two amps, a small switch, and a power conditioner fit in a half-rack cabinet that tucks into a storage closet. The speakers are the only visible part, and even those disappear into the ceiling in most builds.

The Bottom Line for Texas Businesses

The Sonos Amp approach is a fast, reliable, and budget-friendly answer for businesses that need streaming background music across a few zones. It is not a substitute for a full commercial sound system where paging, emergency announcements, or high-volume coverage are required, and any honest integrator will scope it that way. Our team designs, wires, and programs these systems for restaurants, offices, and retail spaces across Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, and we are happy to walk your location before you buy anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Sonos Amp power commercial speakers?

Yes, for low-impedance passive speakers rated within its 125-watt-per-channel output. It pairs well with most in-ceiling and surface-mount speakers used in restaurants, offices, and retail. It is not designed for 70-volt distributed speaker lines.

How many rooms can one Sonos Amp cover?

One Sonos Amp drives one stereo zone, meaning one pair of speakers. For multiple rooms, each zone gets its own Sonos Amp, and the zones are grouped together in the Sonos app.

Does the Sonos Amp work for restaurant background music?

It works well for background music in small to mid-size venues with one to four zones. For louder environments or venues that need paging and emergency announcements, a commercial 70-volt system with a paging controller is the correct platform.

Is the Sonos Amp hard to maintain for a business?

No. There is no local server or computer. Playlists and schedules live in the Sonos app, and any manager can adjust volume or music from a phone. Firmware updates install automatically over the network.

Do you install Sonos Amp systems in Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio?

Yes. Multimedia Technology Group installs and programs Sonos Amp commercial audio across all four markets, with Houston as our home base and the largest share of our installs.
